Community Safety
Safety Tips
Like many of our surrounding communities we live in a very safe environment. Most of the crime we experience in Silver Springs is opportunistic. Specifically, theft from vehicles accounts for more than half of all the crimes reported in 2019!
Taking a few actions can make a difference:
- Make sure your vehicle is locked if parked outside. Make it your evening routine!
- Put any valuables away. Even small change in the cup holder can be valuable to some.
- Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car.
- Use a plug in timer to disable your garage opener at night.
- Surveillance cameras can help.
Be aware
One of the best ways to prevent crime is to be aware of your surroundings and to know your neighbors so that you know when something is not quite right. Some streets in Silver Springs have an email list to keep all the neighbors connected. There is also a Facebook group called ‘Silver Springs Crime Watch’. Finally the SSCA will post information through their communication channels if necessary.
What to do?
If you see a suspicious activity please call the non-emergency police line at 403-266-1234.
If your see a crime is in progress:
1. Call 911.
2. Do NOT confront the individual(s).
3. Move to a safe location.
Winter Safety
It is the homeowners responsibility to keep the sidewalks in front of their house free of snow and ice. To help you with this you will find a free mixture of gravel, sand and salt in front of the fire station right here in Silver Springs!
Traffic Safety
Whether driving, wheeling or walking, we want everyone to be safe in our community. The SSCA has been working diligently to improve traffic safety. Lots has been done but many issues remain. You can find a list of our goals for improvement here, if you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to contact us at safety@silverspringscommunity.ca. For persistent traffic violations at specific locations (speeding for example), you can also post a traffic service request.
